SCIOS inspection: certainty for your installation, more than an obligation

Fire pump installations are a crucial part of fire safety in buildings and industrial environments. They ensure sufficient water pressure and capacity is available in case of fire to quickly and effectively extinguish it. A properly functioning system can make the difference between limited damage and a major incident. That’s why a SCIOS inspection is so important.

What does a SCIOS inspection involve?
SCIOS is an independent certification scheme for inspecting and maintaining technical installations, including fire pumps. During a SCIOS inspection, the system is thoroughly checked for things like the mechanical condition of the pump, electrical components, water pressure, control systems, and alarm functions. Any signs of wear or abnormalities are also identified.

For diesel-powered fire pumps, a SCIOS inspection is legally required. Since 2016, these systems fall under the Dutch Environmental Management Activities Decree, which classifies them as combustion installations. This makes inspections under SCIOS scope 4 (for the engine) and, if applicable, scope 7c (for fuel lines) mandatory. Scope 7c applies when the system uses external fuel lines, such as from a day tank.

How does a SCIOS inspection work?
The inspection starts with an Initial Special Inspection (EBI), which assesses the system’s design and operation. This serves as the foundation for all future periodic inspections. Depending on engine capacity, re-inspections take place every two to four years. Certified inspectors use advanced measuring equipment to verify performance and ensure compliance with current regulations (such as NEN standards). Any defects are recorded and advice is given on repair or replacement.

Why is this inspection so important?
A SCIOS inspection goes beyond mere legal compliance. It contributes to:

  • Reliable operation: Assurance that the system works when it’s needed.
  • Prevention of failures: Early detection of wear or technical faults.
  • Enhanced safety: For people, buildings, and company assets.
  • Reduced risks and costs: Insurers increasingly require proof of proper maintenance. A valid SCIOS certificate helps prevent issues with claims or higher premiums. It also serves as evidence of compliance during audits or legal disputes.

In summary
A SCIOS inspection is not only a legal obligation, but above all a smart investment in operational reliability and safety. It ensures your fire pump installation is ready when it really counts.

As a SCIOS-certified organization, WB Firepacks performs both the EBI and periodic inspections. Our experienced Service Engineers ensure expert and reliable execution of the entire inspection process.
